where VOH (VIL) is the lowest (highest) output signal that represents a 1 (0) and VIH (VOL) is the lowest (highest) input signal that can be detected as a 1 (0). Consider a CMOS signaling system where the threshold for switching is half the signal swing and therefore the noise margin is set to half the signal swing ΔV or:

NM=delta(V)/2

All the noise sources should be less than the noise margin for the circuits to switch without error. A system typically has two types of noise sources namely, i) noise that is independent of the signal swing (eg. power supply noise) and ii) noise that is dependent on the signal swing (eg. cross talk). The system generates signal independent noise of 500mV and signal dependent noise that is 25% of the signal swing. What should be the minimum voltage swing ΔV for the system to function without error.
