In the Functional Assessment text, Chandler and Dahlquist (2010) make the important point that the analysis of records, interviews, and observational data "does not actually verify the function of behavior" (pp. 100–101). Verification can only occur through experimental manipulation of relevant environmental variables. This process is also known as functional analysis. Some have questioned the utility of functional analyses in schools; however, Mueller, Nkosi, and Hine (2011) examined demographic and clinical data for functional analyses conducted in public school settings and described functional analysis as a viable method in such settings.

This model is ideal for behavior therapists, analysts and the specialists working children who do demonstrate challenging behavior

Speaking of gathering preliminary information, the Behavior analytic consultation to schools (BACS) model uses detailed indirect and descriptive approaches to the functional behavior assessment. The model aims at collecting information in the school settings by conducting experimental functional analyses. The results collected from the analysis are then assessed for validity. The BACS include 8 components: functional behavior assessment, analysis, and treatment selection, evaluation of the treatment, training of teachers, and evaluation of teacher practice, generalization evaluation and assessment of validity issues.

After gathering the preliminary information, the data and the treatments are then subjected to hypothesis testing process to validate them. The results are subjected to goal attainment scaling and social validity by rating the statements on the Likert scale. The results are then expressed in standard deviation units. The difference between the treatment and the baseline mean is evaluated. Having computed the baseline standard deviation from the results the date is then placed on then ANOVA table for hypothesis testing
