Guns Use
These days, in the United States of America, it is very sad to say that individuals are
carelessly making decisions in gun usage to protect them or to accomplish their wrong doings.
Despite the laws enforced for weapon usage in this country, there are still more reports of
careless shootings. Some of these reports are of others who end up killing innocent people in the
processes of harassing or trying to get out of a situation.
Suicide Attempts by Use of Guns
An example of suicide attempts by use of guns is Adam Lanza. He was a twenty-year-old
teen who woke up on 14th December 2012, shot his mother, and went to Sandy Hook
Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. He managed to kill twenty students, six staff
members and then shot himself in the head (Lewis, 2013). This incident left people in disbelief
about what happened and what was in this gentleman’s head to cause him to commit such a
murderous act. It is horrifying to know that guns can be owned by everyone and anyone today,
and that the laws are basic enough that some weapons are held illegally. This gives room for
individuals to continue dying due to reckless and unnecessary shootings.
Research shows that gun ownership is reducing vastly in the numbers of individuals who
legally own guns. If we take the initiative to minimize giving ownership of guns to persons, then
we honestly help to curve or bring down the high level of the crimes being committed by
individuals using these deadly weapons. Although in the past people used to use knives to PREVENTING FUTURE MASS SHOOTINGS THROUGH GUN CONTROL

commit murder, the alarming of use of firearms has gone far beyond acceptance (Miller &
Hemenway, 2008).
This sick culture of Americans is most violent of a person trying to address or fight for
what he thinks is right with the use of force. They seem to can’t resolve an issue without use of
strength (firearms) and that is why it is important for us a community embrace laws and peaceful
ways to solve problems. The above is because no matter how hard we try to stop gun ownership,
when people themselves have a habit of using force to get the answers they want we won’t be
able to go far in resolving the matter. So it is important we embrace better ways to resolve our
differences and not by use of guns or any other weapon.
Deal With the Drug War
However, before addressing the issue of weapons, we should as well concentrate on the
immediate causes that trigger one to seek gun defense. The major one is the usage and selling of
drugs via the black market. Some of these drugs, namely marijuana, cocaine and others, were
reported as being expensive (Glassner, 2010). Sometimes these dealers may fail to reach the
agreed terms for the business and due to them having risked selling the drugs, they end up killing
each other without further negotiations. The research shows that the war on drugs is
approximately 1100 murders per year are directly involved in the on the drugs and more the
resulting turf wars. So no matter how we look at gun usage and the number of murders number
in the U.S., the first key is to get to fight the drug war because these two things are connected
(Glassner, 2010).
Law Enforcement Gun Usage PREVENTING FUTURE MASS SHOOTINGS THROUGH GUN CONTROL
4
There have been several incidents where law enforcement have been seen or recorded
using their weapons wrongly. By that I mean they would sometimes shoot too soon are too often.
Sometimes malicious threats are made and violent actions are taken by overzealous officers
(Fireams Misuse, n.d.). At times it is necessary, but most or some use them without thinking and
innocent people end up injured or dead. It would be very helpful if our law enforcement officers
are genuine to themselves and not to use guns as they wish and only use when necessary
(Mustard, 2001).
Use of Licensed Guns wrongly
Research results showed that some politicians in the United States of America legally
own guns. Some are due to power and authority and may use these weapons to manipulate the
less powerful people to accomplish what they want. These individuals should be held
accountable and maybe be arrested before a situation ends up with another injured or dead. The
rules and the regulations are set for all citizens regardless of class or power, so should be
exercised to everyone (Beckett and Sasson, 2003).
Domestic Disputes
The United States government should come up with a very strict plan to arrest those
caught with an unlicensed guns. In most cases these unlicensed guns were used in homes to
commit murder resulting from domestic quarrels. According to Straus et al. (1980), police
officers are often killed while answering these calls. This is very dangerous for them and a few
win medals or receive promotions for effectively handling these calls. PREVENTING FUTURE MASS SHOOTINGS THROUGH GUN CONTROL

Domestic Violence & Firearms (n.d.) reported that domestic violence plays a strong role
in mass shootings. Most of these shootings involves the killing of two or more family members
or a current or former intimate partner of the shooter. It’s unfortunate because we can’t control
those who have been convicted of domestic violence from obtaining a weapon without a license.
Or can we?
Final Word
With the understanding that there is no perfect solution, all gun usage should be lawfully
controlled so that the death rates (due to mishandling of weapons) can be lowered. It’s a massive
task to perform but must be accomplished together. Thus creating a peaceful state where
individuals will not have to look for means to defend themselves by committing a vicious act
(Straus et al., 1980.). There has to be some changes in our legal and political state. For example
background checks for all, no guns for felons or the mentally ill, all guns should be registered,
and the banning of high capacity clips and semi-automatics (Lewis, 2013). PREVENTING FUTURE MASS SHOOTINGS THROUGH GUN CONTROL
