Question Details

(Solved) What is love?

What is love? In the Symposium, we are given various accounts of the nature of love. Two speechesseem to be especially at odds: the tale told by Aristophanes, and Diotima’s doctrine. They offercompeting accounts of love’s proper object, which in turn lead them to different claims about what loveis. For your paper, offer a thoroughly reasoned defense of one of these two positions. Make sure toconsider carefully the argumentative resources that might be available to each of the accounts (that is,how each could respond to the other’s objections), and explain clearly what considerations tend to supportthe one you favor. To defend your claim, you may wish to refer to other speeches, to the way in which other characters inthe Symposium behave, and/or to the ideas provided in class discussion. You may choose to write yourpaper in dialogue form. Please give a short justification (of about 300-500 words of the overall wordcount)why you chose these particular characters.

Total paper:  should be between 900-1,200 words (or 5,500-7,500 characters with spaces; roughly 3-4pages), double-spaced with one inch margins, and written in a standard 12-point font (e.g. Times NewRoman).
