GE Goes Digital
The History of GE
General Electric is one of the oldest and most successful companies in the U.S., dating back to
Thomas Edison in 1878. This Boston Globe article provides a timeline of key events in the
history of the company. In 1879 Edison invented the first commercial incandescent bulb in his
lab in New Jersey. In 1892 GE was created by a merger of the Edison General Electric Co. and
the Thomson-Houston Co. of Lynn, MA. The year 1905 brought the first electric toaster and
1910 the first Hotpoint electric range. Read more at:

y.html The Need for Transformation
Over the last century, GE made the bulk of its revenues by selling industrial equipment and
maintenance services to its customers. However, in recent years, it faced increased competition
from companies that were not just in the business of selling equipment. These new competitors
used information generated by large machines or equipment to provide services that improved
productivity and reduced downtime.
GE realized that this trend had the potential to reduce it to just a commodity equipment provider.
CEO Jeff Immelt underlined the importance of this shift, and the need to make drastic changes in
GE’s business model, when he said in 2013:
1 “We know that there will be partnerships between the industrial world and the Internet world. And
we cannot afford to concede how the data gathered in our industry is used by other companies.
We have to be part of that conversation.”1”
In a dramatic move in 2016 GE announced that it would move its headquarters from Fairfield,
Connecticut to Boston to be near the large number of universities and technology companies
there. It also opened a software division in San Ramon CA to be close to Silicon Valley.
Please look at this video of Immelt talking to investors about how GE is becoming a digital
company.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjK3-A5RgW8 The New York Times describes how Immelt came to the conclusion that GE needed to make use of the
sensor data it was capturing from its products and the realization that GE’s competition might be Amazon
and IBM. Immelt began a transformation of GE by selling billions of dollars in assets including the
famed GE Capital which the federal government had listed as “too big to fail.” Please read the article at: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/28/technology/ge-the-124-year-old-software-start-up.html
GE divested itself of $100 billion in assets. According to Industry Week Immelt has a goal of
moving its analytics business in 2015 from $6 billion to becoming a top 10 software company by
2020.

In a McKinsey interview Immelt argues that “industrial companies are in the information business
whether they want to be or not.” GE has added thousands of staff members, created a software
division and is looking at big data and analytics as key to its future.

such a major pivot in stratetgy?

http://ebooks.capgemini-consulting.com/general-electric-and-its-digital-transformation/#10 The General Electric Case provides an excellent example of how a large manufacturing
company is trying to go digital. For this case you are asked to write up a case analysis of
no more than three pages. Because the instructor wrote the case, you can use the
questions at the end of the case to guide your response. Remember that you
want to concentrate on an analysis of the company in the case. You are not writing a
history or summary of the case. Use the information in the case to illustrate your
arguments, but please do not write another history of GE. 4
