Essay # 3 - Poetry
Option 1: Poetry Explication
Write a 700 word essay on the ways in which three (3) of the following elements work to
develop and reinforce the theme of the poem assigned to your poetry interpretation/explication
group.
● Diction and Tone
● Imagery
● Figure of speech
● Symbols
● Speaker
● Irony
● Sound and Rhyme
● Rhythm and Meter
● Form
● Setting and Situation
You may choose any three of the elements listed above. Using the poetry explication sheet
developed by your group as the basis for your body paragraphs, write a five paragraph essay
discussing the poem’s meaning - as you interpret it. Be to use the notes from the explication
PowerPoint shown in class for format.
Option 2: Comparison and Contrast of Two Poems
Write a 700 word essay where you compare and contrast two poems. Consider the poem’s
theme and tone as well as each poet’s use of different element as you discuss each of the
poems.
1) Write a comparison/contrast essay of about 4-6 full length paragraph (10 - 15 sentence
for each body paragraph), paying equal attention to each the two poems. Your thesis
statement should focus on a major similarity of difference between the two poems.
2) Use the appropriate language for discussing poetry in your essay: refer to the poem’s
speaker and to lines and stanza numbers using quotes. Ry to include some discussion
of images as well as the poet;s use of language and other poetic techniques wherever
relevant.
3) Proofread carefully checking for errors in sentence construction, spelling, verb forms,
pronouns, diction, and punctuation.
Some Things to Remember.
1. Refer to the speaker of the poem rather than the author or writer.
2. Separate lines of quoted poetry with a / slash.
3. Use the author’s last name and line numbers within your in text citations (Ex. Frost lines
8-12) rather than page numbers.
4. Remember to introduce the poem’s title, author, and idea in the introductory paragraph.
