Decide whether the following statements are true or false. Justify your answers briefly. (Up to two well-crafted sentences should suffice for each question.)

(a) The set of optimal solutions of a linear programming problem is a convex polyhedron.

(b) If every coefficient in the specification of a standard form LP is rational (that is, if all entries in the matrix A, and in the vectors b and c are rational numbers), and the LP has an optimal solution, then the LP necessarily has an optimal solution whose components are all rational numbers.

(c) The Phase I problem is never infeasible, and it is never unbounded.

(d) When choosing which variable should leave the basis, the reason why we choose the smallest ratio is to make sure that x in the next iteration has a lower objective function value.

(e) If the variable exiting the basis is zero prior to the iteration, then the new vertex is degenerate.

(f) If we use Bland’s (smallest subscript) rule in the simplex method, we avoid encountering degenerate vertices.
