Scenario:
You have been entrusted with discretionary management of a $1,000,000 account. Your client is a 35-year-old
unmarried childless male who earns $500,000 per year in pretax income, and has a savings rate of 33%. His level
of short-term and long-term risk aversion can be characterized as “low.”
The client has hired you for a trial period of seven weeks. He will decide whether to continue the relationship
based on the portfolio’s performance relative to its benchmark index (S&P 1500) during that time.
Specifically, the client is concerned about the following criteria with the following weights: Absolute return (24%): The total dollar increase in the portfolio over the seven week period Risk-adjusted return (23%): The return on the portfolio taking into account the level of risk assumed by you,
as measured by the Sharpe ratio Maximum draw down (23%): The largest dollar decrease in the portfolio from peak to trough during the
seven week period Number of days to recover from maximum draw down to high-water mark (15%): The high-water mark is
the peak value of your investment portfolio over the period Proportion of days that returns are negative (15%)
Constraints: Each portfolio position must be a maximum of 10% of total assets. Cash cannot exceed 20% at any time. You must be invested, not sitting on the sidelines.
Paper:
After trading is completed, each investor (or pair) will deliver a 3-page
1) statement of the investment philosophy applied
2) listing of specific trades, with clear justifications
3) discussion of what went right/wrong with the specific trades and overall portfolio management
4) calculation of values for the criteria listed above -- provide a supporting appendix and Excel file
5) review of lessons learned
