The objective of this project is to turn a critical lens on your own work environment to
note different employment patterns for different groups. The task is to describe the
distribution across age, gender, and ethnic/racial lines at different levels in the hierarchy
of the workplace. Note that this is not an attempt to measure discrimination but merely to
note different employment patterns; determining actual discrimination requires more than
casual observation.
In order to provide context for your observations, you should include relevant
demographic information for the area in which the employer is located. The US Census
Bureau has state and county level information on, among other things, gender, race,
disability, and foreign-born status. The Quick Facts site is well organized and easy to use
(http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/). Include the national comparisons for the state and
county data.
Discuss also the hierarchy of jobs in light of labor segmentation theory (as discussed in
Chapter 7 of Albelda et al). Explain the types of controls and job conditions (i.e., job
security, job ladders) for each level in the hierarchy. You should also talk with someone at
your workplace who has been with the company for a while and who can provide some
historical context. Issues to consider in your report include: Does the distribution of men and women, people of color, people of different
ethnic backgrounds, and foreign-born US residents reflect the representation of
these groups within the community at large? Are new hires for management or supervisory positions culled from within the
company/organization or from outside? What opportunities are there for advancement within the company/organization
and are these opportunities taken advantage of by different groups in numbers
proportionate to their representation in the company/organization? Are job ladders
present and equally accessible? Is childcare offered as a benefit? Has this impacted people’s decision to work for
the company/organization or their choice of shift or position within the company? Are temp agencies used to screen workers for possible permanent work? Has the
use of temporary workers changed over time?
